Replacement Joints

Unlike a natural joint, a replacement joint is not naturally lubricated nor it is repaired through the action of cells and specifically those external cells that help to sculpt and repair bone. A hip replacement has its joint encased in durable polymer and then contains its own lubricant. Everything has to run smoothly in order to prevent degradation of the joints.

The joint in the synthetic hip joint is another example of a ball bearing. The difference is that the moving part has to bear weight on the same surfaces continually, and the ball is not necessarily completely round. Very fine adjustments might have to be made in order to improve the stance of the recipient and to make the resulting motion as smooth as possible.

An inefficient movement places additional stress on the joint. If the problem gets bad enough, the lubricant will have to be replaced. In the worst situation, the joint itself needs replacement. Having a second surgery later in life is more problematic due to a slower expected rate of healing. It is better if the first job be as good as possible.

As microscopic metal flakes accumulate in a lubricant, it adds to the abrasion within the the ball bearing. This might lead to additonal heat and wear, and so it is better if this process does not happen. A person with a hip replacement might avoid sprinting and excess walking, but getting it done right with a polishing machine is also a great option. Hip joints vary in quality, but even the best can be modified to make it even better.

It is not unusual for one side of the body to be slightly heavier than the other. This is largely due to activities that primarily use one side of the body so that it is more muscular. It might also be that one leg has shorter bones than the other. A joint might be eroded because of an unnatural gait, and so the source problem is going to point towards the longterm solution.
